    The Hurricanes: Science and Society (HSS) team at the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography (URIO/GSO) is again partnering with the NOAA National Hurricane Center (NHC) and the NOAA Aircraft Operations Center (AOC) to offer a FREE hurricane preparedness webinar for 4th through 6th grade classes. The webinar will cover hurricane hazards, forecasting, observing hurricanes with airplanes, and hurricane preparedness. The purpose of the webinar is to raise understanding and awareness of hurricanes, hurricane hazards, and hurricane preparation in advance of the 2018 North Atlantic hurricane season. Videos, visualizations, graphics, and other media will be included to engage students. NHC forecasters and AOC aircraft personnel will speak live to the classrooms. 

    This free webinar on hurricanes will be offered NEXT WEDNESDAYMay 9, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. CDT (11:00 am EDT). This webinar is part of the 2018 Hurricane Preparedness Week and the NOAA Hurricane Awareness Tour (HAT). The webinar will be broadcast live from the Baton Rouge, Lousiana, stop of the HAT.

    Questions for hurricane scientists and aircraft personnel may be submitted ahead of time- information for question submissions will be shared with those that have registered. The webinar platform also allows NHC/NOAA personnel and HSS staff to answer student questions in real time during the webinar. This year’s field location, however, means that only a limited number of questions submitted ahead of time, and in real time, will be answered during the webinar.

    We are happy to announce that the Concord Consortium will host a professional development “Solarize Your World” workshop for high school science teachers at the York Harbor Inn in the picturesque town of York Harbor, Maine. The workshop will begin with lunch on Sunday, June 10, and will run through Tuesday, June 12, at 3 p.m. Lodging, meals, and mileage reimbursement will be provided and participants will receive a $400 stipend for completing the workshop.

    At the “Solarize Your World” workshop you’ll be introduced to projects that will allow your students to engage in science and engineering practices with authentic applications. You’ll become familiar with a free computer-aided design (CAD) tool, Energy3D, which provides students with a virtual laboratory to engineer complex real-world solar solutions for homes, schools, public buildings, parking lots, and more!

    This workshop is funded from generous grants from the National Science Foundation and General Motors.

    If interested, please complete this application by April 13. Note that we only have 25 spaces available, so we will review applications and confirm attendance by April 20.

    EXPLO runs a week-long camp in Norwood, MA, centered around hands-on projects and making, focusing on both the tools and technology as well as the pedagogy. We create short, interactive projects that further enhance curriculum teachers already use, as well as share ways to enhance learning spaces. Teachers start the fall with new practical skills and curriculum ideas that they are able to flesh out during the workshop.

    In the past, we have had teachers from a number of disciplines attend, though the nature of our projects seems like a natural fit with science teachers. We have grants available for teachers and are welcoming of educators from kindergarten through 12th grade!

    Integration of Computer Science in Science Opportunity: 

    Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Scheller Teacher Education Program seeks middle school science educator teams of approximately three teachers within the same school from 8 districts to participate in the third year of a National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded Teachers with GUTS Program. The purpose of the Teachers with GUTS program is to study the impact of the teacher professional development in science, computer science, and computational thinking on teachers’ development as computational thinkers and teachers’ enactment of Project GUTS CS in Science curriculum in middle school science classes.  This is a free program that offers stipends, transportation reimbursement and certificate of PDP hours. Please see the flyer and solicitation memo and application for more information.  Applications are due on April 15, 2018 and the program dates are June 25-29.

    MIT Haystack Observatory will host two local high school science teachers for 7–8 weeks in summer 2018, to be paid under the sponsorship of the National Science Foundation. Located 40 miles northwest of Boston, MIT Haystack is a research center engaged in atmospheric science, radio astronomy, geodesy, computer science, and engineering. Teachers will work with staff scientists on a project using observational instruments and will receive hands-on experience. The goal of the program is for STEM teachers to develop a series of inquiry-based introductory lesson plans for a particular high school level.

    In a day-long workshop at the Boston Science Museum and inspired by the short story “Angels Among Us” by Lisa Y. Garibay (to be released Spring 2018), participants will hear from a panel of local professionals who have devoted their lives to both science and faith, then work together to create a collection of best practices, tools, and resources on teaching and discussing science in a faith-based environment.

    Join in a discussion with local educators and reflect on how the interaction of science and religion has affected your life and the lives of students, develop an accessible network of diverse educators, and be inspired to continue the conversation with your students in creative and engaging ways.

    Vouchers will be provided for breakfast and lunch in the Riverview Café. Certificate of participation available upon request.
